Caustic Visions -- images by Troy John McCray ![]() In June 2007, Vorpal Space presented "Caustic Visions" a series of digitally manipulated photographs by Portland area artist Troy John McCray. Digitally manipulated photography is, unfortunately, a much maligned and marginalized art form. This is partly because the art world is slow to accept new mediums, but also because much done with the medium is of poor quality. Troy John McCray's work is a sterling example of the potential inherent in digital manipulation, and an argument for its legitimacy. The images he has produced are striking, evocative, and surreal. They are iconic, subversive, political, and sometimes difficult -- unquestionably serious art. This is due to the subtlety and technical craftsmanship he brings to each image -- and as in all good art the final image transcends the medium, and must be taken on its own merits. More of his work can be seen at www.photomanipulator.com Troy John McCray has a Degree in Fine Arts from Western Illinois University (1988), and spent years as commercial sculptor and painter before transitioning recently into what he describes as being a "full time artist." Over the last couple of years, Mr. McCray has shown extensively in Portland, as well as participating in national juried shows like "The Dirty Show" in Detroit, and the "Seattle Erotic Arts Festival," and shows in Florida and Georgia.
